How to Identify Fabric Quality: Yarn Count, GSM & What They Actually Mean
"Good fabric" is often described in vague terms — soft, premium, breathable — without explaining what actually makes it that way. Two numbers do most of the real work behind fabric quality: yarn count and GSM. Understanding them makes you a far more confident buyer.
What Is Yarn Count?
Yarn count measures how fine or coarse a single yarn is — essentially, how much length of that yarn it takes to make up a fixed weight. A higher count means a finer yarn was used; a lower count means a thicker, coarser one. Finer yarns generally feel softer and drape better, but they also take longer and cost more to spin and weave.
EPI, PPI & Thread Count
Yarn count tells you how fine the yarn is — EPI and PPI tell you how densely those yarns are woven together.
EPI (Ends Per Inch) is the number of warp yarns — the ones running lengthwise on the loom — packed into one inch of fabric.
PPI (Picks Per Inch) is the number of weft yarns — the ones woven crosswise — packed into one inch.
Together, EPI + PPI give you thread count: the total number of yarns (warp + weft) in a one-inch square of fabric. A fabric described as "200 thread count" usually means EPI + PPI add up to roughly 200.
Thread count is often used as a marketing shorthand, but it's incomplete without yarn count. A high thread count made from coarse, low-quality yarn can still feel rough, while a moderate thread count from fine, well-spun yarn can feel considerably softer and drape better. Yarn count tells you yarn quality, EPI/PPI tell you weave density — a good fabric usually needs both to be right, not just one high number.
- Higher EPI/PPI: tighter weave, generally more durable, sometimes stiffer.

What Is GSM?
GSM stands for grams per square metre — literally, how much a single square metre of the fabric weighs. A higher GSM means a heavier, denser fabric; a lower GSM means something lighter and more breathable. Neither is inherently "better" — it depends entirely on what the garment is meant to do. A flowing summer dress benefits from a lower GSM, while something structured benefits from a higher one.

Why You Can't Judge By GSM Alone
Here's the part most people miss: GSM on its own doesn't tell you about yarn quality. A fabric can be heavy simply because it's densely woven with coarse yarn, not because it's premium. Genuine quality comes from reading yarn count, GSM, and weave density together — not any single number in isolation.
Simple Checks You Can Do Without Lab Equipment
- The hand feel test: run the fabric between your fingers. Finer yarn counts feel noticeably softer and smoother, even before you know any numbers.
- Hold it to the light: a densely and evenly woven fabric lets through less light and shows a consistent weave, rather than visible gaps or uneven patches.
- Check the drape: let the fabric hang freely. Lower GSM fabrics fall and move; higher GSM fabrics hold more structure.
- Look at the finishing: even, straight seams and a clean reverse side are usually a better quality signal than the fabric weight alone.

Internationally, textile testing bodies like ASTM International maintain standard test methods for exactly these properties — yarn count and fabric weight are tested using established, repeatable methods rather than guesswork, which is why serious fabric mills and buyers reference these standards when specifying quality.
